Achieving Work-Life Balance: Why Having a Passion Outside of Work Matters

Achieving Work-Life Balance: Why Having a Passion Outside of Work Matters

In today’s busy world, finding a balance between work and personal life can be challenging. With all the demands of your job and daily responsibilities, it often feels like there’s no time left for relaxing or pursuing hobbies. But making time for what you enjoy isn’t just a luxury—it’s crucial for your overall well-being, both mentally and physically.

The Importance of Work-Life Balance

A saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." This holds true because focusing only on work can lead to burnout, lower productivity, and loss of motivation. When your days revolve solely around work, stress builds up, and personal relationships may suffer. Additionally, prolonged office work can lead to health problems like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, back pain, and eye strain. By setting aside time for hobbies, exercise, or spending time with loved ones, you give yourself a chance to reset. This break helps reduce stress and can improve your physical health, allowing you to return to work with a clearer mind and more energy.

The Benefits of Hobbies

One great way to find balance is through physical activities. Exercise helps release stress and boosts your mood. It improves focus and overall mental health. More importantly, it gives you a break from your daily routine and counteracts the physical strain of office work.

For me, playing football is a perfect way to relax after a busy workweek. After spending long hours handling digital work (social media and website management), events and meetings, a game of football helps me clear my mind and feel refreshed. The physical activity and the fun of being part of a team are great for recharging and addressing the physical stress that comes from sitting behind a desk all day.

The Value of Relationships with Friends and Family

Achieving work-life balance isn’t just about personal time; it’s also about staying connected with others. Friends and family are important for reducing stress and improving happiness. Spending time with those you care about provides support and helps you feel grounded.

I’ve found that staying in touch with friends and family helps me unwind. These connections remind me that life is more than just work.

You need to pay RM35. For that amount, you get:

  • A top-quality football field: The organiser rents a field from an international school, so the pitch is always in excellent condition.
  • A referee to keep the game fair.
  • A sports photographer and videographer to capture your best moments.

MenBol is more than just football; it’s a community where connections are made and friendships are forged. Whether individuals are building confidence, starting fresh, or making a comeback, MenBol welcomes players of all levels. The platform is designed to ensure that no one’s lack of a team holds them back. MenBol offers LOTS OF FUN and unforgettable moments for everyone.

One thing I like the most about this social football is the aggressive behaviour and tackles are prohibited. The concept is to chill and relax, and reminding to all that this is not a tournament to be aggresively competitive.

All in all, it’s a great way to step away from work, get some exercise, and have fun with others.

My Comeback to Football

Before discovering MenBol through a best friend who is a regular player, I had not played football since September 2015 (during diploma days). Now, in August 2024, I decided to make a comeback after an 9-year break,  after realising that my work-life balance was off and that my sedentary lifestyle was negatively affecting my health. I signed up to the game as a goalkeeper, a position I have loved and played since childhood and followed in my father's footsteps. It was both exciting and challenging.

To be frank, I started with low self-esteem, low fitness, and confidence. But gradually, through dedication and the support of MenBol, I managed to get back on track. Having played three games now, I am happy with my progress and the joy football brings back into my life.

Conclusion: Finding Your Balance

Work will always be there, but it’s important to remember there’s life outside of the office. Long hours and repetitive tasks can lead to health issues, but making time for activities you enjoy helps to maintain balance in life and improve physical health. Whether it’s football, painting, or spending time with family and friends, these activities reduce stress, improve health, and even boost your work performance.

So, make time for what you enjoy and the people who matter most. If football sounds like fun, join us on the field. It could be just what you need to bring balance into your life and support your well-being.
